These are links to some of our favorite organizations’ websites. They provide hands-on help and information on grantwriting, nonprofit management, nonprofit news and researching grant sources.
NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
AAGP (American Association of Grant Professionals) National membership organization of grantwriters. Michael was the treasurer from 1999 to 2005.
Charity Channel An “online community” of nonprofit professionals. Features eNewsletters on several subjects (including Grants and Foundation Review, which Michael co-edits), Charity University – online classes (Michael has taught for them) and Charity News from around the world.
GuideStar This online service allows you to access information about any nonprofit or foundation in the United States, including their IRS 990 financial forms. You have to sign up, but its free.
Chronicle of Philanthropy “The newspaper of the non-profit world”.
Foundation Center The folks who publish the national Foundation Directory and other books.
The Grantsmanship Center The premier national grantwriting training organization.
OREGON ORGANIZATIONS
TACS (Technical Assistance for Community Services) TACS is a nonprofit organization that consults to other nonprofits, presents workshops and convenes peer networks (i.e. Executive Directors Network). Since 1977, probably Oregon’s oldest and best known technical assistance provider. Michael has done trainings for them.
Willamette Valley Development Officers WVDO is the Portland area’s membership organization for fundraising professionals, with monthly meetings and special events.
Foundation Databooks Comprehensive directories and CD-ROM databases of grantmaking foundations in Oregon, Washington, California, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
Institute for Nonprofit Management at Portland State University Classes for nonprofit professionals, volunteers and students to develop management skills. Michael teaches grantwriting for them through the Public Administration Department.
Nonprofit Association of Oregon is a membership organization for Oregon nonprofits, established as a spinoff of TACS.
CNRG is an online resource and network for emerging young leaders in the nonprofit and government sectors. They also have live events.
Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable. Planned giving is long term fundraising, such as bequests and living trusts.
Nonprofit Network of Southwest Washington is a membership and training organization serving nonprofits across the Columbia River from Portland.
Oregon Department of Charitable Activities The people in the Oregon Attorney General’s office who monitor nonprofits in Oregon. The website includes a database of Oregon charities and information on Oregon regulations.
FEDERAL GRANTS INFORMATION
Grants.gov The central resource for researching all federal grant programs and applying online.
Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Information on every federal government grant program.
IRS Information on Tax-Exempt Organizations Information, forms, statistics on nonprofit organizations from the guys who make the rules. Find out if an organization is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
